5 Promises

Community Partnership supports and promotes the 5 Promises as defined by America's Promise – The Alliance for Youth – a framework which grew out of the President's Summit for America's Future 10 years ago. The Alliance partners have built consensus around this research-based framework for youth development which focuses on 5 Promises:

  • Caring Adults
  • Safe Places
  • Healthy Start
  • Effective Education
  • Opportunities to Help others

According to Alma Powell, Chair of America's Promise – The Alliance for Youth and General Colin Powell, USA (retired) Founding Chairman of America's Promise, “Less than one in three of our young people are receiving enough of the 5 Promises to be confident of success" “…when every child receives every promise, we will see… higher high school graduation rates, more college enrollment, fewer teen pregnancies, fewer young lives destroyed by drugs and fewer young people involved in – victimized by crime."

The 5 Promises are closely tied to the 40 Developmental Assets model, or what we call the 40 Building Blocks. Through our work at the Partnership in building these critical developmental assets, we are helping to ensure that more of the youth in our communities have the necessary 5 Promises.

In 2008, for the third year in a row, Springfield-Greene County was named as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People by the America's Promise – Alliance for Youth.
