CPO Brings Skater and Speaker Mike Smith to Springfield Public Schools

On May 13th and 14th 2013, Community Partnership of the Ozarks collaborated with Springfield Public Schools to bring in skater and national speaker Mike Smith to town.  Smith, a native to Imperial, Nebraska, has been speaking professionally for the last five years and has been a youth outreach worker for over 10 years.  He is the founder and executive director of a  non-profit called THE BAY and its offshoot, Skate For Change (SFC).  Both are receiving national acclaim and support from the likes of Red Bull and State Farm.

During this trip to Springfield, Smith visited Reed Academy, Study Middle School, Pipkin Middle School, Weaver Elementary, Excel Day School, and Great Circle-Boys and Girls Town of Missouri.  He spoke to more than 1,500 youth in his two-day trip.  Smith covers topics ranging from leadership and decision making to bullying and substance abuse prevetion.  “Youth were truly inspired to become the change in their community by his easily relatable message,” said Eric Hillgren, Community Development Specialist with Community Partnership of the Ozarks.
