Director of Fund Development and Communications

Summary
Plan, develop and manage the organization’s individual, corporate, and philanthropic fund development and external public relations programs and activities for the 21-county operating area.

Reporting Structure
The CPO Director of Fund Development and Communications reports directly to the Executive Director. There is lateral communication with CPO Division Directors as well as informal oversight of administrative assistant(s) for donor data record keeping and various communications activities.

Position Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Direct Accountabilities

  • Develop and execute fundraising programs that generate all funding for the CPO core operations budget.
  • Plan, develop and implement fundraising programs in the areas of individual donors/prospects, corporate, foundation, and major/leadership gifts. Create an annual fund development plan including strategies, time frames and outcomes.
  • Be responsible for developing and managing a fundraising budget.
  • Conduct regular, personal and meaningful interactions with priority donors/prospects through events, face-to-face meetings and conversations. Ensure appropriate acknowledgement and stewardship for all donors, which may include recognition events. Write personalized communications, in concert with the ED, for high-value and high-potential donors/prospects.
  • Plan, develop and coordinate special events in support of fund development program.
  • Coordinate and implement direct mail solicitation at least twice annually, i.e. Holiday letter.
  • Manage financial data and constituent information on Gift Works software, and generate reports for Board and management review.
  • Develop and execute the external communications/public relations program including annual planning, media relations, donor communications activities, the annual report development, and quarterly newsletter, in cooperation with the ED.
  • Oversee and coordinate Resource Development Committee activities, reporting, meetings and communication.
  • Identify and advise on new funding opportunities, ( grants) that might lead to new programming opportunities or extend current programing efforts.
  • Attend CPO board meetings.

Administrative Duties

  • Work effectively with staff, Board, Resource Development Committee, and the community to coordinate and implement a successful fund development program and to promote the CPO mission, organizational and strategic planning goals.
  • Work effectively with staff, Board and volunteers to coordinate and implement a successful external public relations program that increases awareness for the organization, its mission and impact.
  • Supervise subcontractors for any necessary communications and fund development projects.
  • Informally supervise administrative staff as it relates to donor database management, website and social media updates, content and changes, and other duties.
  • Assume responsibility for special projects as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
This position requires a self-directed, independent individual who takes initiative and is able to create systems and processes inherent to this position. In addition, it requires:

  • Mastery of the English language, both verbal and written
  • Excellent writing skills with experience writing for diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated computer literacy. Proficient with database management (Gift Works preferred), Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedI.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and presentations.
  • Demonstrated track record of accuracy, timeliness, dependability and reliability.
  • Interpersonal and communication style conducive to executing a multidisciplinary team approach.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, demonstrating sensitivity to cultural differences.
  • Flexibility and poise in dealing with a diverse set if individuals and organizations, especially donor prospects.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex and varied tasks within a fast paced setting, while still meeting the priorities of the position.
  • Detail oriented while still able to understand and promote a global view of CPO
* Minimum five years experience in direct fundraising, including annual planning, individual/donor cultivation, special events coordination, and corporate and foundation fundraising programs.

* Bachelor’s degree in related field (business, communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, ect) Masters preferred.
