Gratitude and a Season of Thanksgiving
“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” William Arthur Ward
Gratitude is something I try to practice and show every day. And this time of year, it seems to be a little easier and present because the world seems more focused on it as well. The Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season really is a special time to be thankful for our families, caring friends, amazing communities, and all the gifts of life we have. But there are also times when a loss triggers gratitude, when you recognize the importance of appreciating the simple things. Or when you have an amazing blessing happen in your life…a marriage, a new baby or child, a great new friend. Or when you realize that you have many benefits and opportunities that others are not so lucky to have.
So for me, there are so many things to be grateful for, especially the opportunity to serve our community. This is what gives me and, I highly suspect the rest of our team at CPO, purpose as well as the opportunity to learn and grow. To see how we can positively impact individuals, families, groups and whole communities is so meaningful and rewarding. An amazing example is Hope Connection—our community’s one stop service site for the homeless—which was held last week. There were so many who were in severe need, some trying to escape domestic violence, and others who just wanted a hot meal, a free haircut and a warm place to land for a few hours. But there were also so many stories of hope and gratitude that came from the guests who received services along with the volunteers, community partners, and staff who were there to serve. Gratitude for the opportunity to show and receive compassion and kindness, for the ability to give and receive eye exams, haircuts, and health care services, for the chance to have a meal with another person who is not judging but just there to support, and for the transformative experience that Hope Connection provides to everyone involved. For those of us lucky enough to work here at CPO, this is just ONE of many opportunities we have every day and I am so thankful for that!
