Hope Connection Serves Hundreds

The 2012 HOPE Connection once again showed how much Springfield’s homeless population needs basic services.  This year 35 providers served 477 homeless and precariously housed individuals.  The number served has increased significantly over the four-year history of the event, rising 23% over 2011 and 48% over 2010.  Everything from healthcare, to housing, to veterans’ services were offered.  The following is an excerpt from one of those served by this year’s event:

“The eye doctor was Dr. Pierce and he is my new favorite hero….I started crying at the end of the day…Glasses are so out of reach for me at this time….On the way out I received a bag of groceries, socks, and hand sanitizer….I do not know words to adequately express how I feel….What a community of kind and caring and helpful people.  I am so grateful I don’t know what to do.”
